The first Bugatti hybrid will arrive in 2027 without the venerable W16
Future Bugatti models will feature a hybrid powertrain. The brand dates its first electrified model for 2027.
Bugatti has been working for many years with its W16, an engine producing about 1,500 horsepower. The latest creation of the French firm, the Mistral, also adopts this engine.
But when presenting this new model at Pebble Beach, Bugatti confirmed that it was its last 100% thermal model. However, it is possible that limited series will be released before the first hybrid. Indeed, the company had already announced that the first electrified Bugatti would not be electric.
It will appear in 2027, and it will leave the venerable W16 behind. The smaller architecture of the future vehicles from Molsheim will also allow for different concepts to be presented.
"This provides opportunities," Bugatti design director Achim Anscheidt told Autocar. "There are opportunities to have slightly more athletic shapes in the future, without losing the overall generosity and sovereignty."
"It will also have its constraints, because of the performance and the need for it. But we know every inch of our cars so well now that we know exactly what would help us."
Frank Heyl, his deputy, confirms that future Bugatti hybrids will have a more distinct design. "It's going to be incredible, proportionally, technologically, in terms of innovation, it's going to be unexpected. This design is going to completely surprise people, and it's a real joy to work on this project."
